German language levels

The council of Europe has categorized six language levels from A1 to C2. The categories frame the language requirements for each level and create transparency among the European languages. While it is not carved in stone what each level should teach, it is about the mastery of skills language learners should possess at the end of each level. Those skills are divided into listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills and help form the scope for each level. Read the sections below to learn more about what you will learn at each level.

A1 level (beginner)

A1 is the basic level. At the A1 level, each person will learn the basic concepts of introducing themselves, asking questions to others about themselves, and answering basic questions about themselves 

 Students will get familiar with common expressions related to phrases for shopping, traveling in the city, consulting the doctor and ordering food, etc.

By the end of the course, each student will be able to respond and communicate in an easy way if the topic is familiar and the other person speaks slowly and wants to help.

The A1 level certificate fulfills the visa requirement for family reunification for spouses who wish to join their husband or wife in Germany.

A2 level (elementary)

A2 is the second level following the completion of A1. At the A2 level, you will learn how to deal with the day-to-day situations of how to ask for things that are familiar to you. Each individual will learn to express himself more efficiently than A1.

You will learn how to Make yourself understood in a simple way. Tell about your interests, family, job, background, job, and everyday activities.

Answer simple familiar questions if the other person talks slowly.

B1 level (intermediate)

The B1 level also is also called the intermediate level. At the B1 level, each student will learn how to understand information about topics related to speaking about school, work, travel, and passion. 

Navigate everyday life with confidence and commonly into familiar situations and interests. They will be able to navigate with confidence in their day-to-day lives.

They can talk about their wishes, plans, desires, and things that happened in the past. You may also express or defend your own opinion. Finally, the language can be use more independently.

B1 is an essential prerequisite for non-EU citizens to start working in Germany. You can also request an apprenticeship to learn a profession in Germany with a B1 certification.

B2 level (upper intermediate)

At the B2 level, each student will learn to communicate spontaneously and naturally. They start to understand the main context of more complex information related to environmental issues, healthcare, the media industry, and career options.

In addition, they will be able to speak clearly about different subjects. They can communicate with native speakers almost effortlessly. Also, they may be able to give a detailed opinion and defend their arguments in structured and logical perspectives.

C1 level (advanced)

At the C1 level, one can use the language with near-native proficiency. Students will be able to understand the implicit meaning and will be able to communicate advanced way. They are at the level to use the language flexibly, spontaneously, and fluently. 

They can give detailed statements on complex topics. One can possess an enlarged vocabulary and the ability to paraphrase. One can confidently work, study and socially interact professionally and confidently.

C2 level (native proficiency)

According to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), the C2 level is the highest level of German language proficiency that can be achieved by a learner. Upon reaching the C2 level in German, learners will be able to understand almost anything they read or hear and express themselves fluently, spontaneously, and accurately in any situation.
Learners need to have in-depth understanding of German grammar, syntax, and vocabulary to reach the C2 level. The students can read and understand academic and scientific texts easily and speak and write German fluently and accurately. It is expected that learners at this level have near-native proficiency and can communicate effectively with German-speaking colleagues, clients, or friends.

The duration of the German language course in Ernakulam with us depends on the method chosen. Our A1 super intensive course has a total of 70 hours. Classes will take place from Monday to Friday for 2.5 hours. It gives you sufficient time to study and prepare for the examination. We will guide you through all the tips and tricks for successful Goethe or other exam.

The duration of the super intensive A2 level German language course in Ernakulam is a total 90 hours with us. Each person can complete it in 6 weeks if they can take 2.5 hours of classes daily from Monday to Friday. Everyone will benefit from 15-minute refreshment break between classes.

The duration of the super-intensive B1 German language course in Kochi is 120 hours with Lingudemics. Each student can complete it in 8 weeks by taking the online course 3 hours a day from Monday to Friday.

The duration of the B2 level super intensive German language classes in Kochi is 180 hours with us. The course can be completed in 12 weeks by participating in the online course for 3 hours per day.

We only begin level C1 when requested. But it must meet the minimum seat requirements, for the class to begin. We do not accept payment for C1 until the minimum number of participants has been reached. Kindly requested to contact us before registering for C1 courses.

The process of learning German is not as difficult as most people believe. There is a connection between English and German, both of which are Germanic languages. However, learning German will give English speakers an advantage.

The German language test A1 is quite simple if you're well prepared. It contains four modules: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. A few questions are common to all exams, such as introducing oneself and writing a letter.

The Goethe A1 exam takes 80 minutes to complete.

The A2 level is relatively simple compared to levels B1 or above. To learn efficiently, you need A1 knowledge.

A2 is known as the elementary level. It is also a beginner level. In order to communicate fluently, the A2 level is insufficient.

It is possible to get small jobs such as packing and supermarket work with A2 level certification. However, the work situation will be very complicated because it is not at an advanced level.

There is no expiration date for Goethe-certificates A1 through C2. In general most employers and institutions accept certificates dated within two years.

The B1 level is where learning the German language becomes more challenging. Students who have learned from native speakers will already know the accent and will be more confident when listening.

You can get a job in Germany with B1 effortlessly. B1 is one of the main conditions for non-EU workers to start working in Germany. However, a profession such as nursing requires a level B2 certification to register as a nurse in Germany.

The B1 level is considered fluent. But to reach native proficiency, you must achieve a minimum C1 level.

Yes, you can take examination B1 by avoiding A1 and A2. But you must have proficiency levels A1 and A2 to write the B1 exam. Skipping is only useful if you want to save A1 and A2 examination costs.

The B1 exam at Goethe Institute for adults costs 12000 Indian rupees. At the same time, the ÖSD exam is 13800 for B1.

Level B2 is not difficult if you are well-trained and willing to put in some effort. Grammatical structures get a little difficult if you've not studied languages other than your mother tongue. However level B2 is not considered an advanced level like C1 and C2.

You can achieve mid-level fluency after learning B2. On the other hand, B2 is not the advanced level.
